2. Important notes

2.1. Intended use

The VISION EARS Custom and Universal In-Ears are a device for reproducing audio signals. Read this user manual carefully before first use. It contains important information for your safety and for the use and care of the product. Any other use is expressly considered as not in compliance with the intended use and leads to the warranty and liability claim being forfeited.

2.2. Safety instructions

2.2.1. Personal safety

Danger due to high volume:
The earmolds of the Custom In-Ears and the design of the Universal In-Ears reduce external noise by approximately 27 dB. Thus, you are well protected from the usual stage noise and can set the signal of the In-Ears at a comfortable volume.

Here are a few data from occupational health and safety for volume orientation:
  • 95 dB = are tolerated for max. approx. 6 hrs. per week
  • 100 dB = are tolerated for max. approx. 2 hrs. per week

As a rule of thumb, a level increase of 3 dB cuts the tolerable exposure time in half.

If your ears are affected by too high a volume over a long period of time, it can lead to permanent hearing damage. Therefore, be sure to observe the following instructions:

  • Set a low volume before using the In-Ears.
  • Set an appropriate volume when using the In-Ears.
  • Do not expose yourself to high volume all the time.
  • The higher the volume, the faster hearing damage can occur.

Danger due to non-perceptibility of external noise:

  • Avoid distractions from music in traffic or other potentially dangerous situations.
  • For traffic safety reasons, do not use the In-Ears while driving motor vehicles or riding bicycles.
  • Do not use the In-Ears in places where it would be dangerous not to be able to perceive ambient sounds, e.g. at level crossings, on train platforms and at construction sites.

Danger due to ingestion:
Small parts are included in the delivery contents of the In-Ears. Children can swallow the small parts and choke on them. It is therefore essential to observe the following instructions:

  • Store the In-Ears and all accessories in a safe place.
  • Make sure that the small parts do not get into the hands of children.

Danger due to skin irritation:
The shells of the Custom In-Ears are made of acrylic. The sound channel that comes into contact with the skin is coated with a skin-friendly varnish. The Universal In-Ears (VE2 - VE8) are also made of acrylic, the shell of the VE10 is made of aluminum. The Universal In-Ears use skin-friendly silicone ear tips. In rare cases, allergic reactions may nevertheless occur. In addition, residues on the In-Ears can cause skin irritation. Therefore, be sure to observe the following instructions:

  • Regularly check the In-Ears and their ear tips (Universal In-Ears only) for residues and clean them with the cleaning products described in this manual if necessary.
  • If you experience skin irritation, contact a doctor immediately.

2.2.2. Device safety

Caution against external influence:
External influences such as moisture can interfere with the functionality of the In-Ears. The In-Ears are not waterproof. It is therefore essential to observe the following instructions:

  • Protect the In-Ears from strong shocks.
  • Protect the In-Ears from water.
  • Do not use the In-Ears in damp places or in bad weather conditions such as rain or snow.
  • Use the In-Ears exclusively in the temperature range from -10 °C to +45 °C.
  • Observe the instructions and recommendations for maintenance and cleaning in this manual.

2.3. Notes on use

  • Make sure that the volume of the device is set to the minimum volume before you plug in and insert the In-Ears.
  • If possible, keep the In-Ears in the original aluminum case on the road, so that they are shockproof and safely stored.
  • Connect the In-Ears only to devices with a headphone jack.
  • If possible, use a limiter in the signal path. This protects not only your ears but also the In-Ears in case of unexpected level peaks!

3. Inserting and removing the In-Ears

3.1. General instructions for inserting the In-Ears

The In-Ears are labeled with the VE logo and a text of your choice for Custom or the serial number for Universal In-Ears. The blue labeled earpiece belongs in the left ear and the red in the right ear.

For Universal In-Ears:
Try out the different shapes and sizes of the included ear tips and use the ones that fit your ears best. They should fit comfortably and seal well, but not pinch.

3.2. Inserting the In-Ears

  1. Grasp the earpiece by the shell with your thumb and index finger.
  2. Now turn the earpiece a little away from you and place the sound channel (Universal with eartip) in the ear canal. If you notice that it is difficult to get into the ear canal, use your other hand to pull your ear up a little.
  3. Now rotate the earpiece back toward you in the ear with light pressure until it creates a good seal.
  4. After insertion, pass the cables from the front over the ears to the back, secure the cable to the collar with the clip and pull the two individual earpiece cables slightly together with the small plastic socket.

Important:
Be careful NOT to press the earpieces into your ear at the cable, but always grasp them only at the shell itself to avoid cable breaks in the long run.

If wearing the In-Ears causes pain, contact your VE dealer or the manufacturer Vision Ears GmbH immediately.

3.3. Remove the In-Ears

To remove the In-Ears, press your thumb lightly against your ear from the bottom to push the earpiece out slightly. Now pull the earpiece forward out of your ear with a small twisting motion.

Important:
DO NOT pull the In-Ears out by the cable, but always grasp them by the shell itself to avoid cable breaks in the long run.

4. Cleaning, care and maintenance

4.1. Notes on humidity

Your In-Ears are well equipped for the sometimes rough conditions on stage, but technology and moisture unfortunately don't get along so well. Therefore, a little care is absolutely essential for safe and long-term use.

Should your In-Ears come into contact with sweat (which is unavoidable with diligent stage performance!), then here's what you need to keep in mind:

  • After the concert, wipe the earpieces with a dry cloth and then place them in your case with dry capsules (dry capsules are available in the VISION EARS store and at hearing aid stores).
  • For concerts lasting longer than 3-4 hours, it is recommended to keep the In-Ears dry during the breaks in the performance, as described previously.
  • If the In-Ears have become too moist, there may be temporary failures. After drying, the In-Ears usually work again, but in the long term, too much moisture can shorten the life of the In-Ears. If a failure occurs that is not resolved after drying, the filters in the sound channels will need to be changed. Please contact us for this by phone or mail.

4.2. Cleaning

After each use, you should at least wipe your In-Ears with a dry cloth, as described above. In addition, we recommend that you clean them more thoroughly on a regular basis. This will extend the life of your In-Ears and prevent skin irritation.

Spray the included cleaning spray onto the included cloth so that it is slightly damp and wipe the In-Ears clean with it.

Important: Never spray directly on the In-Ears, as moisture can get into the sound channel and damage the delicate technology.

With regular use, it can also happen that the sound channels of your In-Ears become clogged with cerumen (earwax). Therefore, you should check the openings regularly and clean them with the included cerumen pen.

Why is cleaning so important?
A dirty earpiece can sound quieter and worse. Often, the volume is then simply increased as a consequence, which can lead to an overload and a failure of the technology in the long term. If the In-Ears were not cleaned regularly, it can happen that dirt in the earpiece is not even apparent at first glance. Therefore, also pay attention to whether you have to adjust the volume more and more over time to get a consistent performance. This is often an indication that the earpieces are dirty.

4.3. Changing the cable

Our In-Ears are delivered with a plug-in connection. In the case of a cable break, the cable can therefore be easily replaced.

5. Ambience System
(only relevant for Custom In-Ears with Ambience Option)

In the Ambience filter set, which is included with the Custom In-Ears with Ambience port, three different damping grades can be achieved:

  • White - approx. - 16 dBA
  • Green - approx. - 22 dBA
  • Black - approx. - 27 dBA (maximum)
Attention:
  • The less the Ambience filters damp, the more low frequency/bass components of the In-Ear signal are lost.
  • Excessive readjustment of the compromised low frequencies at high volume can overload the In-Ears technology in the long run.
  • In-Ears with Ambience Option have a less hearing-protective effect than completely closed systems due to the lower external sound attenuation.
